Influence of a probiotic combination including B. lactis Bl-04 on weight management. Recent scientific studies show that gut microbiota may play an important role in the modulation of the body weight of the host, hence modulation of the gut microbiota to prevent or control obesity, including the use of probiotics, has received increasing attention (Kobyliak et al, 2016; Dahiya et al, 2017).
The objective of this randomized, double – blind trial study was to investigate whether a probiotic mix has additional effects when compared with an isolated dietary intervention on the body composition, lipid profile, endotoxemia, inflammation, and antioxidant profile.
Women who had excess weight or obesity received a probiotic mix including L. acidophilus, L. casei, Lactococcus lactis; B. bifidum, and B. lactis Bl-04, or placebo for 8 weeks.
In comparison with the placebo group, the probiotic mix group showed a greater reduction in the waist circumference, waist-height ratio, conicity index, plasma polyunsaturated fatty acids, and an increase in the activity of glutathione peroxidase* equals antioxidant.
*Glutathione peroxidase (GPx) (EC 188.8.131.52) is the general name of an enzyme family with peroxidase activity whose main biological role is to protect the organism from oxidative damage. The biochemical function of glutathione peroxidase is to reduce lipid hydroperoxides to their corresponding alcohols and to reduce free hydrogen peroxide to water.
As a result, supplementation of a probiotic mix reduced abdominal adiposity and increased antioxidant enzyme activity in a more effective way than an isolated dietary intervention (Gomes et al, 2017).
